Add Android ADB path Mac OS X Yosemite

With the new release of Mac OS X Yosemite I decided to update the instructions of how to add the Android Adb path to Mac from Mavericks to Yosemite. The instructions are quite similar so here we go:

  1. Download the Android Studio Bundle with the SDK.
  2. Unzip file and copy the folder to your home directory.
  3. For instance my directory where the Android SDK is installed: /Users/jorge/android
  4. Open terminal and go to your Home directory with the following command: “cd ~/”
  5. Create a .bash_profile. To do so, in the terminal type: “touch .bash_profile”
  6. Open this new file. In the terminal type: “open .bash_profile”

Add the path to the Android SDK, platform-tools directory. Add the following to the file:
    “export PATH=$PATH:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/android/sdk/platform-tools/”
  7. Save the file
  8. Reload the environment variables with the following command: “. .bash_profile”
  9. Done. Now you should be able to use adb from the terminal.

Look below for the commands in the terminal:

Hi, thanks a lot for the post. one question: where do i download the bundle? In the android website i can download the sdk, then run android from “tools” and add all the required stuff. Still, after downloading, I don’t have /sdk/platform-tools but /platform-tools. I added this path and then . .bash_profile, but, trying to add android platform to phonegap, it says “ANDROID_HOME is not set and “android” command not in your PATH. You must fulfill at least one of these conditions.” Antything I did wrong?

When I installed ADB via Android Studio, the platform path is Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/android/sdk/platform-tools/

In that instance, you will want to change your line to “export PATH=$PATH:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/android/sdk/platform-tools/”

Use $HOME instead of /Users/YOURUSERNAME to reduce one step in the instructions.
In my case it was $HOME/Library/Android/sdk/platform-tools/
